So, who is Mr Kemp?
I'm a published illustrator producing hand-drawn and print-ready illustrations in a bright friendly children's book style, but having trained originally as an animator I can turn my hand to pretty much any style. My published work to date includes various educational posters, leaflets, illustrations for exhibition catalogues and both packs of the Challenge Me! activity cards for Jessica Kingsley Publishers (one of which has since been shortlisted for a NASEN award!)
I studied animation at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design (currently the Arts University College Bournemouth) where I gained a Distinction grade and got the chance to make three short films which have since been shown at various festivals and screenings around the world.
After graduating I trained as a storyboard artist and worked on various children's television series (mainly screened on CITV) including 'Wolves, Witches and Giants' narrated by Spike Milligan, 'Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids' with Nigel Planner and 'Maisy' based upon the books by Lucy Cousins.
Since returning to my home town of Portsmouth I have concentrated mainly on my illustration work. I tend to work in pencil (or pen and ink) before digitally colouring or adding textures. I have a bright, friendly children's book style and can produce print-ready artwork for any project (web or print).
I have designed and illustrated both packs of the 'Challenge Me!' activity cards written by Conductive Educator Amanda Elliott for Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
One of the packs was shortlisted for a NASEN Award alongside the likes of Julia Donaldson, author of 'The Gruffalo'! We were nominated in the category of 'Inclusive Resource for Primary Classrooms'.
These days I work part-time in a library (where I get to read all the children's books!) and spend the rest of my time designing and illustrating as a freelance artist.
